What Can I Do to Protect Myself From Unemployment? In USA

Answer: Your best bet is to look at which industries are creating jobs, such as health care, and get training needed to enter that field. The Department of Labor provides the Career Guide to Industries for that purpose. Another useful tool is the Occupational Outlook Handbook which tells how to prepare for specific jobs, such as administration assistants, which go across different industries. If this is not possible, then continual training in your existing field is necessary, or consideration of additional streams of income from extra part-time work or home-based businesses might be worth looking into.

Answer: A certain amount of unemployment is not controllable, since at any given point in time people will be in between jobs. Furthermore, is unemployment is too low, then the economy is considered to be over-heated and inflation is then more of a concern. Therefore, an unemployment rate below 4% is considered full employment. In fact, a certain amount of unemployment is factored into any attempt to control inflation. Although economists don’t agree on specifics, it is widely accepted that a certain number of jobs must be lost to control each 10th of a percentage point ...

How Is Unemployment Defined? In USA

Question: How Is Unemployment Defined? Answer: Unemployment is defined as by the Bureau of Labor Statistics ( BLS ) as people who do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the past four weeks, and are currently available for work. Also, people who were temporarily laid off and are waiting to be called back to that job are counted as unemployed.

Current U.S. Unemployment Rate In USA

The current unemployment rate has doubled since the recession began in December 2007. It will probably stay between 9.5% - 10% through 2010, even though the recession is over. That's because employers resist hiring new workers until they are absolutely sure the economy will stay strong. For this reason, the unemployment rate is a lagging indicator. Although it is not good for predicting trends, it is useful for confirming trends. The current unemployment rate is reported monthly in the Employment Report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Here is a history of the current unemployment rate statistics for every month since March 2007.

Would 0% Unemployment Be a Good Thing in USA

While on the surface it appears that a 0% unemployment rate would be terrific for the citizens of a country, having a small amount of unemployment is actually desirable. To understand why, we need to look at the three types (or causes) of unemployment: Cyclical Unemployment is defined as occuring "when the unemployment rate moves in the opposite direction as the GDP growth rate. So when GDP growth is small (or negative) unemployment is high." When the economy goes into recession and workers are laid off, we have cyclical unemployment. Frictional Unemployment: The Economics Glossary defines frictional unemployment as "unemployment that comes from people moving between jobs, careers, and locations." If a person quits his job as an economics researcher to try and find a job in the music industry, we would consider this to be frictional unemployment.

How Does The Internet Work And How Was It Invented?

Internet is built upon a collection of networks that covers the world. These networks contain differnt types of computers, and somehow, something must hold the whole thing togather. That something is TCP/IP. TCP/IP is the common name of over 100 protocols that are used to connect computers and networks. The actual name TCP/IP comes from TCP ( Transmission Control Protocol) and IP ( Internet Protocol ). Within the Internet, data is broken into small packets called fragments. For example, say that you send a long mail on the other side of the country. TCP will divide the message into packets. Each packet is marked with a sequence number. Each host on the Internet is assigned a unique 32-bit (For IP version 4) IP address. Data are carried out in the form of packets which contain source and destination IP addresses. Internet routers maintain a view of the network topology in the form of routing tables. These tables are consulted when making packet routing decisions. The process of routing ...

Who Is The First Person Invented Mirror?

The Romans were the first to invent the mirror. In Mesopotamia mirrors coated with copper were manufactured as early as 4000 BC, in Egypt from around 3000 Bc and in China from around 2000 Bc. Metal-coated mirrors were invented in sidon, Lebanon in the 1st century AD. Romans also made mirrors by pouring molten lead over blown glass. The history of mirrors dates back to the time when people used to see their reflection in ponds and lakes. Eventually they came up with the idea of making mirrors out of glass and metals.

When Was The First Mirror Invented ?

Actually mirrors have been around since the Middle ages, but they were made of polished metal. Glass backed with a metallic coating replaced the older versions in 13th century Europe and quickly became a must have for the wealthy. Actually, mirrors made in Venice are well known for their workmanship and would be worth a small fortune now, so keep your eyes open when visiting antique shops. You just never know what you might find.

What Do Girls Look For In Boys?

Well, this is something that a girl would only be able to answer perfectly, but with all my experiences in store all I can say is that, most of the girls look for a confident guy, who along with his own can easily bare the responsibility of her as well, who can comfort her, protect her whenever needed, who can understand when to hold on and when to let go.... He should be capable of completely understanding the girl at any state of his life, no matter what they both are going through... And above all a true heart is the most important thing that any girl would search for.. And it's not an easy find now-a-days.... Being in love with a girl, whom I'm gonna propose tomorrow meanseverything to me, and Im sure that I have all these things on my side, and that's why I'm confident.... Understanding and thoughtfullness, with a coating of truthfulness and honesty is what I believe a girl looks fo in a guy... Or a woman looks for in a man.... I hope its helpful.....

Why Boys Tease?

Speaking as one who used to do the same, its a mechanism boys sometimes use to make contact with a girl they fancy without actually telling her. Most of us are cowards when it comes to showing our feelings, not just to the girl but in front of our mates. The reason is that if a boy did tell you and you rejected him, his mates would tease him even worse. Off course they could be teasing you because they are idiots, but my guess is that one of them fancies you. Just smile and say nothing. Remember, in the caveman days they used to hit them over the head and trail the girl into the cave. So maybe your lucky. Ha ha

What Are The Little Things That One Can Do To Make You Feel Loved?

Remembering all the small stuff that we ever talked about, so that when he mentions it again, it shows me how important my thoughts are to him. Writing me poems to show how much he cares for me. Understands when I am tired and that I am not in the right frame of mind to say too much. Loves me no matter how I look that day. Knows when to be there and when to give me space to work things out for myself. He laughs with me and not at me for all the silly things that I do. Just lets me know how much he loves me by holding my hand.

How Can A Daughter Feel Loved By Her Mother?

A daughter feels loved by her mother when she makes a real effort to spend time with her. Even though they have individual ideas...listen to the daughters view points. Advise, don't get angry if you disagree. Small things mean a lot...remember her in small but meaningful ways, a book or magazine she loves to read, go to lunch together and really talk. Show love like you would want to be loved back. ALWAYS be available if you are needed.

What's It Like To Feel Loved?

We need to experience love to know it. I am sure it is not what you think it is or you wouldn't say that you don't want any. How can you know that, if you have never had any. Love can feel like so many things. It is like coming inside to a warm fire when you are freezing. It is like the excitement of riding on a carnival ride, and being way up in the air. It is like a hundred friends jumping in on your side, when a bully is picking on you. It is like a warm puppy, trying to climb up in your lap. It is like winning the hardest video/computer game for the first time. It is like getting the best test score on a really hard test, and having the teacher say, you are the smartest person I ever met. It is even better than that. Would you be friends with me? I like making new friends, and i think you are pretty cool! That is a very good question.

If You Could Extend Your Life, Not Necessarily Indefinitely, Would You Do It?

Good morning all! This is an excellent question Robbie! Thanks very much for taking the time to think of and ask it. Well, since I've always planned on being around a realllllly long time - until I'm 150 actually, this possibility may never enter into my realm, God willing. I hear your questions – 'Is she really that optimistic?' or 'Is she really that stupid?' you want to know. Well, not only am I that optimistic, I am also that DETERMINED, and you all know that once a girl is determined you better get the heck out of her way or she'll knock you over and cover you with the dirt from the wheelies she pops with her wheelchair while she's heading into the sunset!!!! LOL Now please don't get too excited, I only use the wheelchair when I have to go any distance, when I tip easily or when it's so hot that I just can't use my leg properly; the rest of the time I use my cane or the walker (again depending on how tipsy I am. CHEERS!!). ...

May God Continue To Bless You?

He has a plan for everything, but when sin entered the world, way back with Adam and Eve, then the whole world was cursed. That brought in pain, disease, suffering, natural disasters, violence etc. It is not His will that this all happens, but He gave us all the gift of free will and choice, and when we choose wrong, there is consequences. These consequences are far reaching. It seems Satan has free reigh of the earth, but it is actually limited.

Will I Die Tomorrow?

It is so hard to understand God's ways, but the book of Isaiah says, His ways and thoughts are not our own. Are We Going To Be Sucked Into A Blackhole And All Die Tomorrow?

Okay this rumor is all about the Large Hadron Collider on the French-Swiss border. Today is the first day that it has ever been used (it just successfully did its first experiment about 1 hour ago). By creating hundreds of thousands of head-on collisions each second with this machine, physicists hope to understand the fiery conditions of the universe a trillionth of a second after the big bang. The findings could also help resolve some of the biggest mysteries in physics, such as the existence of one long-hypothesized particle called the Higgs boson—or the "God particle"—thought to be responsible for giving all other particles their mass. Some people are worried that the experiments could also create unwelcome discoveries, such as particles and other exotic phenomena that could swallow up Earth or destroy the universe as we know it. For instance, one possibility is that the collisions will pack matter together so tightly that it may collapse to form miniature black holes, and...

Why Does God Allow Pain And Suffering To Continue In This World?

He allows us to make our own choices and the choices we make have consequences and it effects everyone. Everything you do or say effects someone and it goes on and on like dominos falling. Why are YOU so sure that God's allowing it ??? Because it could just be the way YOU perceive it. Couldn't it also be the life/God is trying to teach YOU/us lessons, but what we experience. I am an agnostic, and I firmly believe that WE as a species perceive almost everything that goes on as something to do with some "outside force", call it God, or whatever. But we as the dominant species, of this planet, bring it upon ourselves, and only WE can judge whether it's pain and/or suffering. I, myself, prefer to look at it as "lessons", and I try to learn from EACH and EVERY LESSON, life has to give me !!!

Free online learning center

I usually have 6 centers going on in the room plus I select three students each day to use a computer. The students at the computer select a free online math game from our class math page or they are sent to a computer that I have loaded with software that meets their needs. Each student has a colored dot on their desk. The dot corresponds with a center on the chart. The dots on the students desk stay the same. The center dots change every day so that a student does a different center each day. When the student gets to center on their jobs list. They get their center folder (I have them place all their center sheets in this folder. Periodically, I remove their finished work and check them. About once every two weeks.) After they finish the center and the center sheet, they place the sheet in their center folder. Next they clean up their center and put their center folder away.

Learn When You're Most Fertile

A woman isn't fertile every day of her cycle. A study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences showed women can only get pregnant six days out of the monthly cycle - the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. If you and your partner are only having sex once a week, you may be missing your ovulation window! You may have learned in high school health class that ovulation takes place 14 days after the start of your period, but that's only for people who have a consistent 28-day cycle, says the Mayo Clinic - and not even all of those people ovulate at the same time

Pregnancy Nutrition Advice For Mother And Baby

If you happen to be expecting a baby or if you are looking into pregnancy tips, then one thing you are going to want to give priority to is pregnancy nutrition. After all, this defenceless little one is relying on YOU to give it all of the vitamins and minerals that it needs to grow and function normally. You will be able to help avoid birth defects or having a premature baby by looking after your own pregnancy diet because, in turn, you are actually looking after your baby's health and well-being. You must consume just the right balance of minerals, vitamins and calories in order for your baby to grow. Even though you may be taking prenatal vitamins, you need to have a good handle about other things that you should be eating in order to ensure your pregnancy nutrition is up to scratch. Yes, it is true that your doctor will prescribe prenatal vitamins but there is even more that you should be doing to ensure that you have a perfect, little "bundle of joy". You must ask yo...

Should Pregnant Women Eat More Seafood?

For years, pregnant and nursing women have been warned to limit the amount of fish they eat, because many marine species may contain high levels of mercury, which endangers newborns and fetuses. Yesterday, however, a children’s health group challenged the conventional wisdom, advising pregnant women and nursing mothers to eat more fish so as to ensure optimal brain development in their babies.Fearing mercury contamination, many pregnant women avoid seafood altogether. That may actually harm newborns, according to some scientists. (John McConnico for The New York Times) What’s going on here? Currently, the Food and Drug Administration advises pregnant women to limit their weekly seafood consumption to no more than 12 ounces, or about two servings, per week. The newest recommendation comes from the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, a nonprofit group that focuses on childhood health issues. That group’s scientific advisors say that pregnant women and nursing mothers shou...

Fish Oil For Pregnant Women-How It Could Help

Thanks to good health education women in pregnancy are well aware of the general advice, like not smoking, which could unduly affect the health of their baby. Work has been done which looked at how dietary supplements could also play an influencing role. One such study into fish oil for pregnant women was carried out by the university of western Australia. It took a panel of 98 expectant women who didn't eat any more than two portions of fish a week and were non smokers. From a period of about twenty weeks of pregnancy to when their babies were born, each one was given either a 4g fish oil supplement or one containing just olive oil. Then they waited until the children reached two and a half years of age and conducted various tests on the kids, looking at their development and measuring their growth. There were some interesting results, even after allowing for other factors like breastfeeding and how old the mother was. Within the group of kids whose mums had taken the omega 3 supp...

Tips on Becoming Pregnant

If you are trying to become pregnant than here are some tips to increase your chances of becoming pregnant and to help make sure you have a happy healthy baby. One of the first things you need to do is stop taking any contraceptives. Your cycle may become irregular for a couple of months but eventually will return to normal and after the 1st month you quit taking them you will become fertile again. Many doctors say that taking iron is important during conception. They strongly feel that it will lessen you chances of having damage to your child’s brain and spinal cord. Smoking and drinking can lower your chance of getting pregnant and can lead to serious birth problems like miscarriages, or being underweight, and premature birth. It is very advisable to quit smoking and drinking as soon as you plan on conceiving. It is best to cut down on caffeine because to much caffeine can reduce your ability to absorb iron and increase your chance of still born. Weight can also reduce your chances of...

Best position to get pregnant

There is no real 'best position' to get pregnant. If when making love at around the time of ovulation, penetration is achieved and ejaculation occurs then there is a good chance of getting pregnant whatever the position you are adopting. When ejaculation occurs, the sperm are shot up inside the vagina right up to the mouth of the cervix and even higher, the sperm from there will start to move upwards aided by vaginal mucus towards the moth of the fallopian tubes where most fertilization actually takes place. The only reason for thinking that certain positions are better than others is gravity. It is said that you cannot become pregnant if you make love standing up. This is NOT true.As I just stated, the sperm is virtually injected into place. Admittedly, whilst standing, a lot of semen will naturally flow down and flood out of the vagina... but not all of it. It is also said that if a woman lies with her legs up for 15 minutes after making love that the chances of conception wi...

Why cant I get pregnant

We all know that smoking during pregnancy is not a good idea but what exactly happens if we do? 'Surely an occasional cigarette won't hurt'... Or will it? When you smoke it increases the levels of the poisons carbon monoxide and nicotine in your bloodstream and hence that of your baby too. The effect of these chemicals constricts the blood vessels and restricts the flow of oxygen to the placenta. The placenta is what nourishes the baby so with less nutrients and oxygen reaching the baby, growth will be drastically affected, resulting in a smaller and weaker child. In many cases smoking during pregnancy can even result in premature birth, miscarriage or even fetal brain damage. Smoking whilst pregnant may also bring about high blood pressure in the baby, learning difficulties, developmental difficulties, mental retardation, and respiratory disorders such as asthma. The problems of being a smoker during pregnancy do not cease at childbirth. Your milk supply will be reduced ...

What you need to know before you get pregnant

We all think about what our families will be like when we are young girls, and hope for healthy children. Though the things you don’t know about pregnancy can hinder the health of your baby even cause miscarriage. So you should learn everything you can about conceiving and protecting your child in the womb and before. Since the children are growing inside of us the things we consume and the way we take care of ourselves will affect the child growing inside.Ensuring your safety as well as theirs is important. Preparation to conceive should take place at least 3-4 months in advanced if not longer. Unhealthy habits can endanger the child upon conception. The first trimester is the most vital since the babies vital organs are forming during this time. Things like the brain and your baby’s heart are developing and can be severely damaged if you do not take care of them. Consuming alcoholic beverages, drugs not just street drugs but some prescription and over the counter as well, and not get...

What is the optimum moment for fertilization to occur?

What is the optimum moment for fertilization to occur? Obviously this should be around the time of ovulation. The ovum will survive for a period of 12 hours or so in which it is capable of being fertilized. Ideally, fresh sperm should be inside the female body prior to ovulation so when this occurs fertilization can happen. The sperm can last for 3 or more days inside the woman's body, considerably more time than the fertile window of maybe 12 hours that the ovum has. The secret to getting pregnant fast is to know your body. To learn what phase you are in and to predict as closely as possible when you will ovulate so that intercourse may be performed as close to this time as possible. Don't forget that lovemaking too often can reduce the virility of sperm and reduce the sperm count. For women who have regular cycles, the time of ovulation can be quite accurately predicted.presuming that your 'luteal phase' is 14 days long (the most normal) then ovulation will occur some...

When is the best time to get pregnant?

The period of time between ovulation and the first day of the menstrual period is known as the 'Luteal Phase' sometimes referred to as the 'Post Ovulation Time'. The length of the luteal phase is fixed and in the majority of women lasts for exactly 14 days. This number can vary with some women having a luteal phase of 15 or 16 days and others as short as 12 days, but, whatever the length of your luteal phase, it is always constant being the same number of days long, month in - month out... even if you have irregular periods. If you do have an irregular cycle then the 'irregular' part of the cycle is the first part up to ovulation. Once ovulation has occurred then your period will start exactly 14 days later (or however many days long your luteal phase is) unless of course fertilization has occurred.

Sexual intercourse

The second thing you must consider is the health of the mother-to-be, particularly if she has conditions that are known to affect the ability to conceive. These include irregular periods, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), amenorrhea, and fibroids. If you have any known or suspected fertility issues, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible. Men are generally fertile throughout their lives; however, if the father-to-be has any issues that are known to affect his fertility, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible. These issues could include a variocele, prostate gland abnormalities, or unusually small or soft testicles. The other key here is “actively trying to conceive.” One of the first things your doctor will need to know is whether or not ovulation is taking place, and whether or not you are having sexual intercourse that culminates in male ejaculation inside the woman's vagina during the period of her fertility. The window of fertility every...

When Should You Consider Fertility Treatments

As pleasant as the process of trying to conceive a baby can be, when there’s no resulting pregnancy month after month, it can become very frustrating and depressing for couples. If you’ve been trying to conceive without success, it may be time to consider fertility treatments. The answer to the question of when to consider fertility treatments is two-fold. The first thing to consider is the woman's age. A woman's fertility peaks in her early 20s and declines as she moves into her 30s. In addition, a woman in her 20s has many more opportunities to conceive than a woman in her late 30s or early 40s. The general rule of thumb is that if you’re under 30 and haven’t conceived within one year of actively trying, it’s time to check with your doctor. If you’re over age 30, and you haven’t conceived within six months of actively trying, it’s time to make the call.

How long does it take to get pregnant?

Many people write to me convinced that there is something wrong with them because they can’t get pregnant… when I ask them how long they’ve been trying for they tell me 3 or 4 months. It seems that so many people, probably due to what we have been taught as teenagers are so convinced that as soon as they have unprotected sex they will become pregnant that when they have unprotected sex for 3 months continually and don’t become pregnant then they begin to wonder if there s something wrong with them or if they have a fertility problem. To be trying to get pregnant for up to 18 months before successfully conceiving is not out of the ordinary with many couples not becoming pregnant until after 12 months of trying. It actually sounds a lot when you think you’ve been trying to get pregnant for 3 months for example. In reality, with the ‘window for getting pregnant being just a few days in most women then in 3 months then there might not have been more than a total of 6 -9 days in which conce...

Best strategy for getting pregnant naturally

Always Use the Holistic ApproachIf you notice one thing in common about the other three tips, they involve a strategy for getting pregnant naturally, without the use of medicines, chemicals, or fertility surgery procedures. While you may be on the hunt for shortcuts, the quickest way to get pregnant is typically the natural way.

Eat the Best Foods for Fertility and Avoid Foods That Lead to Infertility

Eat the Best Foods for Fertility and Avoid Foods That Lead to Infertility As mentioned previously, infertility is a sure-shot sign that there is something wrong on the inside. And of course one of the best means of keeping your internal system in order and more conducive to getting pregnant, is by being selective about what you eat and don't eat. There are many foods that will assist you in your efforts to become pregnant, such as whole grain breads, beans, and full-fat dairy products. There are also foods and beverages that can decrease your chances of conceiving significantly, in some cases as much as 50%.

Avoid Fertility Treatments and Surgeries like the Plague

If you are currently having difficulties getting pregnant, you may believe that you have to resort to expensive and painful medical procedures, such as IVF and IUI. But these types of treatments often do more harm than good, and can lead to some very serious consequences for your child, including increased risk of premature birth and 9 times the risk of developing cerebral palsy. This is why natural methods of getting pregnant are always the safest route, because it increases the chances of your baby being a healthy and vibrant child.

The beneficial effect of exercise holds across all sorts of activities

Each year in the U.S., more 100,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer. To see what effect exercise has on lowering this rate, researchers at Washington University and Harvard University combined to review 52 studies over the last 25 years which linked exercise and the incidence of cancer. Overall, they found that those that exercised the most (5-6 hours of brisk walking per week) were 24 percent less likely to develop the disease than those that exercised the least (less than 30 minutes per week). "The beneficial effect of exercise holds across all sorts of activities," said lead study author Kathleen Y. Wolin, Sc.D. of Washington University. "And it holds for both men and women. There is an ever-growing body of evidence that the behavior choices we make affect our cancer risk. Physical activity is at the top of the list of ways that you can reduce your risk of colon cancer." So, are there any studies out there that link exercise with a negative outcome? In a r...

The Best Medicine is exercise

It just seems too good to be true. Study after research study consistently promoting the endless benefits of exercise. Couch potatoes everywhere are waiting for the other shoe to drop, telling us that all of those scientists were wrong and we should remain as sedentary as possible. Yet four additional studies released recently each give the same prescription for improving some aspect of your health: exercise. They add to recent evidence that regular workouts can improve old brains, raise kids' academic performance and give a brain boost to everyone in between.

Women live longer than men, on average

Women live longer than men, on average, but its no secret that age takes its toll. A new study finds that largely owing to obesity and arthritis, which take root during early and middle age, old age can be miserable for many women — even when comparing men and women of the same age. A 2005 study that found that women suffer more pain than men, in part because of perceptions of pain related to differing hormone levels. But the new study flat-out finds that a higher percentage of women suffer painful conditions.

10 Ways to Keep Your Mind Sharp

We expect the prowess of our joints and lungs to slowly decline as we age, but the thought of our minds doing the same is intolerable. Here are some top prevention tips worth their weight in wits, plus a few to forget. -- Robin Nixon, Special to LiveScience

Old Age More Miserable for Women

Women live longer than men, on average, but its no secret that age takes its toll. A new study finds that largely owing to obesity and arthritis, which take root during early and middle age, old age can be miserable for many women — even when comparing men and women of the same age. A 2005 study that found that women suffer more pain than men, in part because of perceptions of pain related to differing hormone levels. But the new study flat-out finds that a higher percentage of women suffer painful conditions. Among 5,888 people over 65, women suffered up to 2.5 times more disabilities than men of the same age. Higher rates of obesity and arthritis among these women explained up to 48 percent of the gender gap in disability — above all other common chronic health conditions, researchers announced today. "While women tend to live longer than men, this study shows that they are at greater risk of living with disability and much of the excess disability is attributable to higher rate...

improvements in hygiene that will help reduce infections

Multiple sclerosis, a disease where the fatty insulation around the nervous system comes under attack, appears to be on the rise, and type I diabetes, "a childhood form of diabetes almost unheard of at the turn of the 20th century, is up from one in 5,000 or 10,000 to one in 250 in some regions," said Joel Weinstock, chief of gastroenterology at Tufts University Medical Center in Massachusetts. Even hay fever, which plagues roughly 1 out of 4 people in the United States, is something that may have largely emerged only in the 20th century, Weinstock said "What if I told you that there are some countries that don't even know what hay fever is?" he asked. The rise of these disorders might be due to the very improvements in hygiene that have helped reduce infections in much of the world. The body's immune system is regularly exposed to antigens, molecules that it recognizes and reacts to, such as compounds from viruses or bacteria. "But the immune system ne...

Do you need to be exposed regularly to antigens for it to work properly?

Why Are Humans Always So Sick?

The swine flu outbreak this spring is just the latest in the mountain of ailments that seem to beset humanity, from the incurable common cold to each potentially deadly cancer diagnosed at the rate of every 30 seconds in the United States. So is our species sicker than it has ever been? Or is our current lot far better than it used to be? It turns out the answer to both questions might be yes. While humans as a whole do live longer than ever before, we now suffer certain illnesses to a degree never seen in the past — including skyrocketing rates of diabetes and obesity and, surprisingly, ailments such as hay fever. Among the possible causes for our modern ills: super-hygiene, sedentary lifestyles, and a lack of worms in our stomachs. Life expectancy shot up dramatically on average across the world during the 20th century, increasing from just age 30 or so in 1900 to roughly age 67 now. (It’s not that many people didn’t live to ripe old ages back then. Rather, the shift was due in large...

Computers Just Keep Getting Cheaper and Better

If the dramatic price reductions and quality/speed improvements of computers and other electronic products happened suddenly all at once, it would probably be declared to be a miracle. If nothing else, it would certainly catch our attention. But when the price reductions and quality improvements happen continually and relentlessly all the time, we become immune and either don’t even pay attention, or tend to take the improvements for granted.

International Business, Articles, IB Research Papers, Resources, Case Studies, Examples

International trade is the exchange of goods and services across international boundaries or territories. In most countries, it represents a significant share of GDP. While international trade has been present throughout much of history, its economic, social, and political importance has been on the rise in recent centuries. Industrialization, advanced transportation, globalization, multinational corporations, and outsourcing are all having a major impact. Increasing international trade is basic to globalization”. This article discusses about several different models to predict patterns of trade and to analyze the effects of trade policies such as tariffs and risks in international trade

Examples in History, Mathematics, and Science

The preceding chapter explored implications of research on learning for general issues relevant to the design of effective learning environments. We now move to a more detailed exploration of teaching and learning in three disciplines: history, mathematics, and science. We chose these three areas in order to focus on the similarities and differences of disciplines that use different methods of inquiry and analysis. A major goal of our discussion is to explore the knowledge required to teach effectively in a diversity of disciplines.

U.S. Skill Shortages and Unemployment: The Current American Paradox

Yet currently the U.S. unemployment rate remains at 9.7 percent (11 million workers). Over 40 percent or about 6 million Americans have been unemployed for six months or longer. The average length of joblessness is over 31 weeks, the highest level since record keeping began in 1948. How can we make sense of this skills and unemployment paradox? Gerald F. Seib noted in his April 2 Wall Street Journal column, “[T]he long-term unemployment problem fits into a long-term pattern in which the old job skills of many Americans no longer match the job requirements in an information-age economy.” An analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data on unemployment by educational level points to the same conclusion. The March 2010 rates were consistent with what has been reported since the beginning of the recession. The unemployment rate was 14.5% for high school dropouts, contrasted with 10.8% for high school graduates; 8.2% for those with Associate’s degrees or certificates; and 4.9% for those wi...

No amount of enjoyment a hunter may experience

Among people who believe that animal welfare is important, most would agree that there can be no moral justification for recreational hunting, or hunting that is done strictly for pleasure. No amount of enjoyment a hunter may experience by killing an animal outweighs the pain and terror suffered by the animal he kills. Even more people, including many recreational hunters, would object to recreational hunting that is done in confined or unnatural spaces designed to make the animals easier to kill. For traditional hunters, these so-called canned hunts violate the principle of fair chase …

documentary about the major sources of the food produced in the United States

That’s one reason why I do my best to live a vegan lifestyle (in addition to my empathy for, and solidarity with, the animals whose lives are hijacked for use and abuse in animal agriculture and other economic sectors); it’s a relief to me to be able to sit out at least a portion of a system that is dishonest, environmentally damaging, and exploitative of animals and workers alike. Food, Inc. made all of the above very clear, but as angry as viewers will and should be, its presentation is not that of a dire, overly earnest, relentlessly depressing documentary. It is made visually interesting by the use of graphics and animations (such as charts and moving text), and it tells a number of human stories that bring the material to life. I hope that people will see Food, Inc. but that afterward they won’t be quite as frustrated as I sometimes am by the way the world works.

How can we nurture a sense of wonder that is linked to some universal sense of goodness rather than its evil mirror image?

The younger citizens of this century are bombarded with such images, whether they be about war or deodorant or clothing. One cannot learn about the world without absorbing thousands of images directed at shaping our feelings, wishes, dreams and actions by manipulating out natural sense of wonder. This book is dedicated to the proposition that wondering without questioning is a form of surrender, a kind of acquiescence in the face of powerful forces far from benign. The schools of a democratic society are charged with a solemn responsibility to equip the young with questioning skills that support wondering in the best sense, that insulate young ones from propaganda and manipulation.

How can we make sure no child is truly left behind?

At its best, wondering combines doubting and dreaming in a powerful partnership to test value. We would hope that all of our young will acquire the inclination and the skills to wonder about the authority of a particular Web site, the reliability of information put forth by a TV or radio station and the worth of a politician’s proposal. Wondering should occur throughout every day of one’s life, whether it be about the small issues or the large ones. “I wonder what’s the best way to get around this traffic jam?”“I wonder what’s going to happen in the election today?”“I wonder how I will adjust if my candidate loses?” Sadly, wonder can also serve the interests of social control as politicians extending as far back as the Roman Empire have run a circus of one kind or another in order to win the hearts and minds of the populace. Tribalism, propaganda and marketing depend as much upon magic and wonder as churches, social movements, prophets and revolutionaries. Some of these uses of wonder ...

How can we make sure all children are decently fed and housed?

How can we make sure all children are decently fed and housed? Sadly, wonder can also serve the interests of social control as politicians extending as far back as the Roman Empire have run a circus of one kind or another in order to win the hearts and minds of the populace. Tribalism, propaganda and marketing depend as much upon magic and wonder as churches, social movements, prophets and revolutionaries. Some of these uses of wonder are heavenly, inspirational and divine, while others are evil to the core, trusting to the power of magic and wonder to sway the feelings and the fears of unsuspecting folk in order to capture their obedience. A photograph can provoke the most profound emotional reactions, whether they be feelings of wonder or horror. In current times, these images are used repeatedly in the war for human sympathy for one cause or another. The tie between horror and wonder is strong and the distance between them is all too small.

How can we put an end to war?

These are questions worth wondering about, but answers are unlikely to sprout like spring flowers eager to be picked and displayed. Only the simple minded find simple answers to such profoundly troubling and challenging questions. Sadly, history is littered with examples of leaders and movements that cut short the wondering and searching for genuine answers to such problems, substituting gimmicks, myths and shadowboxing for real solutions. If the citizens are mentally soft, they may climb right aboard such movements without asking tough questions or wondering whether the proposals make any sense at all. At its best, wondering combines doubting and dreaming in a powerful partnership to test value. We would hope that all of our young will acquire the inclination and the skills to wonder about the authority of a particular Web site, the reliability of information put forth by a TV or radio station and the worth of a politician’s proposal.

What and Why Wonder?

Wondering is about entertaining and exploring possibilities. It is about hope and faith. It can also be about questioning and doubt . . . wondering why things are the way they are. We invite good things to make an appearance. We expect that dreams can make life better. We refuse to settle for less. “Hold fast to dreams,” warned Langston Hughes, “for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.” Our sense of wonder - if alive and well - applauds each marvel, each grace, each surprise. We appreciate the extraordinary, the novel and the unique. We hunger for the good, work for the better and hope that the hohumdrum pressures and banalities of life will be supplanted by something more magical. We dream that we can transcend the mundane, that we can escape oblivion, boredom and a life without consequence. If we are capable of wondering, our mind takes flight and dares to dream. Wondering infuses our questioning and our thinking with a spiritual aspect. Children learn that li...

Telling Questions and the Search for Insight.

As the popular press has discovered, people have a keen appetite for research information about how the brain works and how thought processes develop (Newsweek, 1996, 1997; Time, 1997a, b). Interest runs particularly high in stories about the neuro-development of babies and children and the effect of early experiences on learning. The fields of neuroscience and cognitive science are helping to satisfy this fundamental curiosity about how people think and learn.

Access Knowledge as a Public Good

As a child, I believed that all educated people were wise. In particular, I placed educators and authorities on a high pedestal and I entered the academy both to seek their wisdom and to become one of them. Unfortunately, eleven years of higher education has taught me that parts of the academy is rife with many of the same problems that plague society as a whole: greed, self-absorbtion, addiction to power, and an overwhelming desire to be validated, praised, and rewarded. As Dr. Gorman laments the ills of contemporary society, I find myself nodding along. Doing ethnographic work in the United States often leaves me feeling disillusioned and numb. It breaks my heart every time a teenager tells me that s/he is more talented than Sanjaya and thus is guaranteed a slot on the next “American Idol.” The pervasive view that American society is a meritocracy makes me want to scream, but I fear as though my screams fall on deaf ears. To cope with my frustration, I often return to my bubble...

What happens in most schools?

There have always been plenty of questions in schools, but most of them have come from the teacher, often at the rate of one question every 2-3 seconds. Unfortunately, these rapid fire questions are not the questions we need to encourage because they tend to be RECALL questions rather than questions requiring higher level thought. The most important questions of all are those asked by students as they try to make sense out of data and information. These are the questions which enable students to Make Up Their Own Minds. Powerful questions - Smart Questions, if you will - are the foundation for Information Power, Engaged Learning and Information Literacy. Sadly, most studies of classroom exchanges in the past few decades report that student questions have been an endangered species for quite some time. (Goodlad, Sizer, Hyman, etc.) Information-savvy schools should adopt a basic questioning toolkit and then blend it explicitly into each curriculum area where such skills belong.

What is the Difference Between Teaching and Learning

What is the Difference Between Teaching and Learning It seems as if some schools are too focused on teaching and instruction instead of learning. These are schools that keep putting more bricks in the wall. While some might complain that these are merely matters of semantics, the words carry with them powerful and controlling implications. Teaching and instruction tend to focus on the actions of the teacher transmitting and conveying content to students. A school committed to student learning, on the other hand, would focus more energy on how teachers are orchestrating the questioning, thinking and discovery of students so they might come up with their own ideas. In the first school, the teacher might explain the magic of a particular poem and poet to a class, expecting that the students would take careful notes. In the second school, the students might look at the poems and argue over the degree of magic to be found. While the above sketch is a huge overs implification of what actuall...
